Welcome to thoughtful, organic beauty
Hello Joyous is an organic, plant-based, sustainable beauty brand here to bring more joy to your day.
Smoothies are a morning go-to for the McJordan family! Especially when it can take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to get dressed – we need a quick breakfast. And no, I'm not talking about Walker here (hee hee), I'm talking about Vienna! We aim to let her dress herself most mornings, which she can do no problem (she is 3.5 years old), but there are just some mornings that everything is a chore and that's when a smoothie can really get the day off to a joyous start!
I chose the ingredients for this Blackberry Coconut Sprinkle Smoothie with Vienna in mind because they're gut-lovin' (good for a child's developing microbiome ), immune and brain-boosting and provide little people's bodies with nourishing energy all morning long!
Genuine Health's Fermented Organic Gut Superfoods is what we are adding to our smoothies for Vienna these days because it just launched (read more about it) and it is a joyous way to start a child's day with:
I consider this superfood powder to be a whole food supplement and a nutritional insurance policy for parents.
You may have noticed I do not give Vienna a multivitamin. That's because I would rather her get her nutrients from whole foods and whole food supplements like Organic Fermented Gut Superfoods for kids. The problem with most multis for kids is they are full of synthetic nutrients – kids don't have a synthetic nutrient deficiency – they need real food!
I added three types of berries to this smoothie because these are Vienna's favourite superfoods and a natural way to add sweetness, too. Berries are rich in vitamin C for a healthy immune system and fibre for a healthy gut.
I also added coconut kefir (you can add yogurt or kefir), banana, lots of kale, ground flaxseeds (sometimes I'll swap in chia) and oat milk. Flax and chia are a great source of a plant-based omega3 called ALA, which is important for brain health and digestive wellness. Have you tried my Blueberry Flax Muffins or Chocolate Chia Mousse? Both kid-approved!
If your child loves smoothie bowls like Vienna you could add some Chocolate Chia Granola or my Grain-free Nutty Granola from Joyous Detox to this smoothie. Top with fresh fruit and you've got a delicious and nourishing breakfast you can feel good about giving your child!
This recipe is dairy-free, gluten-free, grain-free and low allergen. Most importantly it's extremely nourishing for growing bodies! Because I've added the fermented organic gut superfoods for kids, they'll be sipping on a rainbow of phytonutrients. What I mean by that is there are so many different coloured superfoods, which are the best nutrition bang for your buck you can give to your child.
Makes 2 servings depending on how hungry your little one is!
Because Vienna has been obsessed with everything unicorn these days, just like the Berrylicious Unicorn Poops, she wanted to call this a Unicorn Smoothie. But we will stick with Blackberry Coconut Sprinkle Smoothie!
If you didn't know this already, I've launched a line of supplements for kids in partnership with Genuine Health!! You can read all about this amazing trio right here: Genuine Health-y Kids below! Comment below if you have any questions. :)
Have an awesome week and here's to raising healthy kids!

Another awesome recipe for kids! Can’t wait to try this smoothie. My kids love your books :) it’s the go-to in our house. Question: is it okay to give kids a smoothie with the genuine health collagen in it?
ReplyThank you!! They don't need collagen, but that being said, I don't think it can be harmful. I make the chocolate chip snowballs and the keto bars for my daughter which have collagen and the amount she's getting per snowball or bar is quite minimal. However, if you're wanting to get the full dose for yourself I would just mix it in after you've made it into your cup :)
Will these superfoods cause a stomachache initially?
ReplyIt shouldn't. If you have a stomach ache you may have an allergy to one of the ingredients. I would reduce the amount to half and try again. It's loaded with prebiotic superfoods so it's possible that bothered your tummy but I'm not sure. Let me know how you make out with half the amount.
Hey Joy! What do you use for coconut yogurt? Thanks!
ReplyI like Kefir Kultures or Enjoyoso :)
Hey Joy! I was wondering what your favorite brand of coconut yogurt was (looking for something when I don’t have time to make my own that I can feel good about eating)? I was also wondering if there were any brands of oat milk that you like? Thanks!;)
ReplyWhen I don't make it myself, I'm loving Kefir Kultures or Enjoy Yoso. Enjoy!
Could you freeze and make popsicles with this recipe?
ReplyYes absolutely!!
This sounds delicious for any age! Do I have to use the fermented Superfoods( anything I can replace it with.? Don’t have little ones around anymore. Love all your recipes… they are so tasty and nutritious. Have been making the Tuscan Smoky bean soup all winter, may switch over to the Brocolli/ cauliflower cold soup with warmer weather. It’s all good, thanks for sharing the recipes😊
ReplyYou definitely do not need to use that superfoods powder for this smoothie, you can simply omit it if you don't want to add it. Hope that helps!
