Welcome to thoughtful, organic beauty
Hello Joyous is an organic, plant-based, sustainable beauty brand here to bring more joy to your day.
This post and video was so much fun to put together! Back in April, Vienna and I started growing sprouts from seeds and it was a joyous distraction from the uncertainly of this pandemic. This inspired me to start a full-on urban garden on my balcony with tons of herbs, veggies and other non-edible plants!
This has been such a fun project with Vienna. Every single day we water our herbs because we get full sun on our balcony all day long. It's fun to get our hands dirty too and amazing for our microbiome! Plus it's a wonderful way to connect with each other (I love teaching Vienna about it) and nature!
We've been able to take our salad game to a whole new joyous level because we've been adding at least three different herbs in each salad we make.
Adding herbs to your meals is an incredible way to increase the nutritional value of your meal. Herbs are exceptionally high in antioxidants which protect your cells from damage.
In my video I talk about my favourite 6 herbs I'm using all the time. Before we get to it, an honorable mention goes to dill, I just didn't get any planted in my garden which is why it's not featured in this video but equally delicious and nourishing.
Here are some yummy recipes to enjoy fresh herbs in:
Basil
Mint
Oregano aka "Mountain Joy"
One of the main ingredients in "Italian seasoning" spice mix making it idea to go with pizza or pasta!
Tarragon
This herb goes amazingly well in any chicken dish and it's delightful in scrambled eggs
Parsley
The most overlooked herb! Parsley bring so much nutrition and joy to all dishes. Just talking about it here makes me think I need a tabbuleh recipe here.
Rosemary
What a beautiful idea Joy! Can I ask you where you bought the green planter? I haven't seen one like that. Thank you!
ReplyThank you!! Oh this green planter is awesome!! I've been searching high and low for a second one because I love it so much. I bought it at my local Home Hardware but it's been sold out since May and they told me it won't come back again this season. I am still hoping it will cause I would love a second one!
What a garden on your balcony, Joy! I can imagine all the fragrances from just stepping out. This brought me back to a potted parsley plant I had once, which was fun to care for and eat from. But I actually didn't eat the herb quickly enough, and it ended up withering from later neglect. :( Are herb plants better grown from seeds, or does it matter if potted when purchased? All those amazing antioxidants in herbs...do I get at least some of them from dried herbs? I don't buy fresh herbs much, because I don't use them up in time most of the time before they grow mold pretty quickly in the refrigerator. So I opt for dried herbs as an alternative.
ReplyThank you Helen! I did a combo of seeds and purchased plants. The only thing I would recommend if you can is to buy organic plants and seeds when possible to ensure they are not sprayed with pesticides and fungicides. The only non-organic plant I have is parsley but I'm okay with that. Planting from seeds is very rewarding! Dried herbs are wonderful too and maintain many of the antioxidant qualities.
What's the brand name of the planter box?
ReplyIt is from Home Hardware. I actually can't remember the brand but I tried to get two and they are sold out everywhere! But if you search their website look for: "lime green steel planter box". Good luck!
I have been growing many herbs too. Are you going to dry yours this fall and how?
ReplyYes I would love to do that if I have any left! We've been eating them so much I've had to let them be for a little bit so they can regrow, ha!
I realy enjoyed the video
